i recently got a new computer. well, not new as in brand new, but once used by our schools computer. everything in it has been wiped clean, including the OS, so i figure i should give Linux a try. i've been to www.linux.org to see what it's like, and so far, i like what i see. any recomendations on what type of linux OS i should try? NOTE: my computer uses an old Pentium III, so links to older versions would help if i get this up and running, i can FINALLY provide a decent server that can stay up non-stop, for DoD, and possibly a CfH backup. |

This link may help. I myself would probably recommend Red Hat, but I'm a little inexperienced, so you should make your choice from the info you get from the link.

For most of the flavors of Linux, you can just download data to burn on to a disc(s), and install from there. Make sure you have your Windows computer easily accessable for Linux newbie tutorials and\or if you need to troubleshoot reasons why it isn't working. |

Redhat has had some stability issues in the past, I wouldn't recomend it. However, I would recomend SUSE, as that's what I use and I love it(that is when I decide to hijack my dad's compy and ues it(no room on mine for it right now), it's also got some great programs with it), but it costs money. |
