I've got lots of family up there, and though I can't reccomend any towns, this probably goes without saying but eat some damn lobster

The best reason to move to New Hampshire.

Yeah, I totally see Aud moving there, now.

But Maine, I dunno.... That's travelling dangerously close to Canuck territory.

If I were older, and could find a decent job there I probably would. But it's so effing cold all the damn time in the whole northeast. Give me Phoenix over Bangor anyday.

And yeah, parts of Maine do have lots of French-Canadians, and lots of bilingual road signs. Get some vennison while you're up there as well. Or moose heart or something. Or those red effing hot dogs

Because I dont want to go somewhere thats high in taxes, filled with dying people and could care less about if there are jobs there or not. Smile If you move away from the heavily populated states, you can afford a much nicer, bigger house for less then half that you can in the major metropolitan areas.
Thinking of checking the state out for vacation, and possibly as a retirement area for when Im ready to leave the rat race. Shocked Laughing

I lived in Maine from 1988 through 1998. My parents moved there after I got out of high school and after college I went there as well.

The golden rule to remember about Maine is that it is beautiful, for two and a half months a year. The rest is winter. Middle of june to the middle of August is all you get. Winters are brutal and unforgiving. If you're considering retirement, I suggest you look elsewhere. For vacation, definately something you should do once in your life.

Hot spot's to consider in Maine are Bar Harbor, Boothbay Harbor, Camden, etc... My parents just took a cruise up through the area with some friends - probably the best idea - which hits the coastal towns and stops. My parents moved to South Carolina after I did and wanted to go back and visit.

Keep me posted on what you think and I'll point you in the right direction. Still have a few friends up there... Very Happy Very Happy Good Idea Good Idea

Welp, what we actually want is a coastal town, preferably ocean-side. Not too far from a major city (like within half an hour) Anything like that come to mind?

A quiet coastal town only half an hour from the city!?

Where the heck are you going to find that? ..... it takes me an hour to get to the city in the morning and I only live about 15km away.

My parents are thinking of doing the same thing in the long run. They want to buy a country property which is out of the rat race. Start a small orchard or something similar and make that their retirement income/ past-time.

Nice idea for retirement.

Forget Maine, come to California where our houses are overpriced, where the smog obstructs your view of the mountains, and gas is through the roof. Good Idea

Yeah, getting a coastal house here is not cheap. But I was in Oceano (near Pismo) recently, not a bad place. We rented a house on the beach but there was an atv park on one side and the atv rental place on the other. There was a damn highway right on the beach, its a big game of frogger to get to the water. It was a fun place and if you go out to the beach on low tide you can find tons of perfect sand dollars beacause nobody else ever goes out there, except for the cars. But i'm sure you could get a house away from the traffic jam.

But yeah, this place is nice and it is a fair sized town. Come see the Pacific coast, I bet the Atlantic ocean is a bit boring now. Very Happy
