GAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!
Is it just me or are textbooks the biggest sham ever?
I bought my books online to save some cash. Got them in the mail only to find out 3 of them were the wrong editions and i now have to shell out more money to get the right ones somehow while trying to re-sell the ones i already have. I dont have money to play with here. I dont get financial aid and i'm paying for this on my own (parents not included).
These sadistic publishers come out with new editions every couple years just to charge the "New" edition prices. I cant afford it! Why do these teachers insist on using the newest ones when they know the difference is small and that we're all broke to begin with.WHY!?!?!?! [\Rant]
Anyone else have to deal with things like this or is it just me.... |

yeah books are teh suck! i remember my accounting book cost like $120 from the college store...plus i dont buy them online cause thats happened to a couple of my friends already chick lolz.wav
back to topic, books are way to expensive though, i dont understand it, i remember my first semester at college after i got outta HS i took 5 classes and my total cost for books was like $350-$400!!! I then realized how colleges make their money, besides tuition of course lol
Now i'm only taking 2 classes cause i work full-time, so it doesnt seem too expensive to me anymore lol |

I'm in the same boat as well.
The thing is I'll wait until it is dire necessary to buy the book. Some subjects only scantly use the book and the lecture notes are moer than enough with the supplementary readings. I went to my bookcase yesterday to pack because I'm moving house and I saw that I had a few thousand dollars worth of text books in there that I will never use again. And like you said Chick, you can't sell them because they keep changing to the "new" editions and that means nobody wants to buy the ones that you have.
As most of my lecturers say, the text is only a summarisation and at a very general level. IF you really want to do well you should read people who actually specialise in that area of your study rather than buying a book that is written by someone who has pieces of knowledge about lots of things on the broad subject area.
Failing that borrow your friend's books and photocopy the necessary pages |

I am paying $350 for my books in HS. My brother paid like $600 for his at college. It's freaking rediculous! |

For 15 hours of grad classes I ended up spending 100$ on books that still haven't come in the mail .... but another 100$ on online rights management fee stuff for a butload of case studies stored online. 3 of my other books I have gotten out of the libraries online section ... free.
In undergrad, I lagged behind (took 6 years to do 4 year college), so all my friends had allready taken the classes I needed to take. I just borred books or bought them from friends for same price bookstore would do buy-back. I think I bought 2 or 3 books from a bookstore my last 3 years in undergrad, and only cause they were odd electives classes. |

Though I don't even move in to the dorms till September 17th, I've been looking around early, and my god, these books are going to kill me. One thing I've found helpful for buying online is that my college's online bookstore usually has a picture of the book's cover, so I have something to match it up against checking on eBay and Amazon, and the like. Still crazy expensive though
I don't have a HUGE problem paying out the ass for books that may be a useful reference in the future, but god help me if I'm gonna pay $110 for my Discrete Mathematics book. |

bow bow. WRONG!!
Ever done a law subject? *cough* $500 per book *cough*
They literally pull down your pants and bend you over when you go to pay for the book.
Mind you, you usually do 4 subjects a semester so you can imagine the bill when you fill out your bookcase for the year. |
