Well, it was inevitable.
The F-14 was filled with flaws. The variable geomatry wings were too complex, hiking up costs, almost to an F-15E. Not only that, but the technology is almost as old as it's design. While it had it's time, it was passively replaced by the F-18 and (in some areas) later F-15 models.
The F-35 STOL is far more versitile, and is Much cheaper. Utilizing a single, powerful engine around a slim, incredibally aerodynamic frame, the F-35 may soon be the main staple for the USAF. Mainly a Air-superiority fighter, it may become a multi-role. however, with space constraints, some of the more cumbersome jobs may be passed onto the F-15, -18, or perhaps even the F-22.
Guys, you may be looking at the future of the Airforce.
BTW: Some other out-dated planes include the F-4, SR-71, F-117 (pretty recently), and the A-6 Intruder (heli's take it's anti-sub routines)
But I feel bad about the F-14, but the F-35 promises much more. |

My bro works on F-22s, so I'm far too biased to make a reasonable comment. |

If I had remembered this thread, I would've actually listened to the Modern Marvels that was just on more, because they had a segment on it. |

Wow! You're trained to pilot a harrier? Kick ass!
So, what's it like piloting a VTOL?
oh, and Semper Fi, dog.
And Lockheed Martin makes the F-35.
I wish Northrop Grunman would make some better planes, but I think their on their way down.
And the F-35 may just out-weigh the F-16. Sweet. |

The F-14 will always be the show pony of the Navy air arm.
The F-35 isn't that glamourous. |
