WASHINGTON (AP) -- Americans would have to sign up for a new military draft after turning 18 if the incoming chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee has his way.
New York Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel said Sunday he sees his idea as a way to deter politicians from launching wars. He believes a draft would bolster U.S. troop levels that are currently insufficient to cover potential future action in Iran, North Korea and Iraq.
"There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft, and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way," Rangel said.
My response: Shut up asshole. |

Not the first time Mr. Rangel has done this. Nor will it be the first time his proposal will be shot down. |

I really don't think he wants a draft, he just wants to "alert" the country of the way the war is going.
Would you really want me commanding a tank? |

Honestly? Hell yeah. That would be badass.
But suggesting a draft as a deterrent to wars would be like arming elementary school students with machetes to prevent knife fights. Or something. |

I think everyone in the US should serve atleast one year. It's a good way to get out and see people, experience new things.
He doesnt really want the draft. Like someone said above, he's just doing it to scare America. He even voted no when it made it to... the house? congress? im not sure where it went... it lost with 2 yes. But he voted No because he said the Republicans twisted it and presented it the wrong way. |

Yeah, I think they should only arm middle school students and up.
I'm not really against a draft, to be honest. More people really should volunteer for the armed services to begin with, so if people need a little encouraging, then so be it. |

Honestly? The US has lost more people in a single week in WW2 than the entire Iraq and Afganistan wars have claimed combined.
And if there is a draft, while I wouldn't want to be drafted (I don't think anyone does, if they did they'd have joined already) I'd at least be proud in what I was doing |

Lets not forget...at anytime we wanted, we could bomb the crap out of every city in Iraq and leave.
You don't need an exit strategy if nothing is left... |

I'm sure our popularity rating in the world would hit an all time low. |
